The Camaraderie of the SCUBA Community

January 6th, 2010

SCUBA diving is like entering another world.  The rush I feel when I am 50 feet deep cannot be matched by anything else I do in life.  But I would have to say that after years of experience, the most interesting aspect of SCUBA is the camaraderie.

I can plan trips to anywhere in the world and find at least someone who will want to meet me there or go along.  On a recent trip to Florida, I was able to put a SCUBA event together.  It got so big, by itself, that it was rather phenomenal when we all arrived.

I contacted a friend of mine and told him that I would be coming to Florida.  We made plans for a diving expedition when I got down there.  Then, it went from there.  Before long, there were about ten couples and fifteen additional divers who wanted to go along.

Well, that was fine with us because we love the company.  The more the merrier.  So, I met him in Miami and we went to dinner the night before the dive.  That’s when he decided to tell me how big our dive had become.  I can honestly say that I was shocked.  But, I knew from years of experience that dives have a way of growing sometimes.  I should have known that this one could get big.

The next day, we met at Emerald Reef and there was a nice size group of divers.  We were looking at having a great time.  I can compare SCUBA camaraderie to that of biking and the Marines.  We always love being around each other and we love doing what we do.

Everywhere I go in this world, I can look forward to having a handful of divers who will be happy to take me diving with them.  I normally contact several divers before I am about to travel.  I get names and places before I even leave my home.  It doesn’t even matter if I have ever met them before, there’s a common bond that exists between divers.

Belonging to a tight community like the SCUBA community is something you’ll never get anywhere else.  Your love for SCUBA grows with each new diver you meet.  It’s like their passion for diving rubs off on you and yours on them.  You are encouraged with each new trip and your experiences keep growing dive by dive.   That’s SCUBA.  If only for one thing, that’ s what to like about it.
